In a battle of pitching aces, Texas’ Cat Osterman and Sam Houston State’s Shalayne Blythe each threw two-hitters Wednesday, but Osterman and the Longhorns got the best of the Bearkats, winning 2-0 in the first game of a nonconference softball doubleheader at McCombs Field in Austin.

Osterman struck out 19 Bearkat batters and gave up a double to SHSU’s Lauren Boone and a single to Amanda Collier.

In the nightcap, the Longhorns won 3-1 as Texas shortstop Desiree Williams accounted for three of the Horns’ hits with an RBI.

Texas center fielder Tina Boutelle, who hit a home run in the first game, hit the game-winner in the late contest, a two-run HR that broke a 1-all tie in the bottom of the seventh off Bearkat freshman sensation Brandi Crnkovic.

Crnkovic struck out five Longhorns and walked just one to take the loss in the second game.

Boutelle accounted for both Texas runs in the first game. She led off the bottom of the first for the Horns with a solo home run. Boutelle walked in the third inning, stole second and scored on an error.

Blythe walked only three batters and struck out four as she faced 24 Longhorns in seven innings. Blythe now is 2-1 for the season. Osterman is 4-0.

Boone scored the Bearkats’ lone run of the second contest to give SHSU a 1-0 lead in the third inning. The senior second baseman singled, moved to second on an error and to third on a groundout by Tanya Hooser, then scored on a wild pitch.

Texas tied the game in the fourth inning on a home run by Williams. The Bearkats were one out away from taking Texas to extra innings but Boutelle’s two-out, two-run walk-off home run was the game-winner.

Sam Houston State travels to the University of Houston to participate in a tournament this weekend.
