Summer is almost here and there are plenty of things to do in Huntsville to keep young people busy the next three months.

Sam Houston State and Huntsville and New Waverly high school coaches are offering various summer camps to help kids improve their skills in a number of sports. Whether it is baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, volleyball, track or day and overnight camps, there are a number of options to choose from.

Hornet Track and Field and Cross Country Camp

    Sign up now for the 2010 Hornet Track and Field and Cross Country Camp, scheduled June 7-11 at Huntsville High School. The camp is open to all young athletes in kindergarten through eighth grade (of the 2010-11 school year). Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m. each day and camp ends at 10:30 a.m., with pick-up at 10:45 a.m.

    Each day will be divided into specific events with a focus put on each athlete’s best event. On June 11, a mini meet will be held for family and friends to attend. Campers need to wear comfortable shorts, T-shirts, socks and shoes. They need to wear sunscreen, bring water and a sweat towel. Cost of the camp is $40, and $20 for each additional sibling. Sign up now for Bill Goffney Summer Basketball Camp

    Registration is now open for the Bill Goffney Summer Basketball Camp. The four-day camp, which will run June 7-10 at New Waverly High School, is open for those entering grades second through ninth and is designed to teach fundamentals. The cost is $40. Two Willie Fritz football camps this summer

    Sam Houston State head football coach Willie Fritz will host two high school camps this summer on June 11 and July 22. The cost for each camp is $40. The camps will begin at 9 a.m. each day. Campers will be placed in an individual group by position and ability. The Bearkats coaching staff will be on hand to offer instruction and evalution. Sign up for 2010 Huntsville Hornet Football Camp

    The Huntsville Hornets are hosting two football camps this summer for players in grades two through nine. The first camp is scheduled June 14-16 for players in second through sixth grades, and the other camp is scheduled July 26-28 for players in seventh through ninth grades. Cost for camp if paid by June 4 is $50 for the first camper and $25 for siblings. After June 4, cost is $60 per camper and $35 for siblings. Jason Hooten Basketball Camp to be held June 14-17

    Sam Houston State men’s basketball coach Jason Hooten will host a youth camp for girls and boys in grades first through 12th on June 14-17 from 8 a.m. to noon each day at the Health and Kinesiology Center on the SHSU campus. SHSU baseball to host four camps this summer

    The Sam Houston State baseball coaches will host two youth camps and two high school evaluation camps this summer. The first high school evaluation camp will be held June 14 at Don Sanders Stadium from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the second will be held Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of the first camp is $125 and the second is $75.

    The first youth camp will be held June 28-30 and the second will be July 12-14. Campers have the option of half (9 a.m. to noon) or full day (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) sessions. Campers ages 6-12 can also stay overnight. Cost for a full day is $190, half day is $125 and overnight is $350. All campers will receive a T-shirt. Brenda Nichols Basketball Camp set for June 21-25

    Sam Houston State women’s basketball coach Brenda Nicholls will host a camp June 21-25 at the Health and Kinesiology Building on the SHSU campus. Campers ages Pre K through kindergarten will go half a day and the cost is $100. Campers in grades first through 12th will go a full day (8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and the cost $200. Brenda Gray hosting two volleyball camps

    Sam Houston State head volleyball coach Brenda Gray will host a general skills overnight camp on June 27-30 and an advanced skills camp July 21-24. The cost of the overnight camp is $385 and the deadline to register is June 20. The camp will target the camper’s volleyball position and enhance technique simultaneously. The advanced skills camp is open to high school students and is $385. Registration deadline is July 14. Bob Brock to host two softball camps this summer

Tom Brown soccer camp July 19-23

    Bearkats head soccer coach Tom Brown will host a summer camp July 19-23 for ages 11-18. The cost of the camp is $475 for residential and  $425 for commuters.
