The Sam Houston State women’s tennis team opened its 2006 dual match schedule with a 7-0 victory over Louisiana Tech, losing only two sets in nine matches.

The Bearkats won all six singles matches and the top two doubles pro sets.

“This is a good win for us to start the season,” SHSU head tennis coach Scott Shankles said. “I was happy with our doubles by taking winning at No. 1 and No. 2 without losing a game and almost winning at No. 3.

“After winning the doubles point, we came out a bit nervous in singles in the first few games in each match. But then took care of business to sweep them in singles. It’s good to finally get back into our competitions again. This is a good win for us.”

Posting victories for the Kats in singles competition were Irina Sotnikova, Lata Assudani, Emma McDougall, Brooke Mills, Peta Taylor and Cristina Flores. In doubles, the teams of Assudani and Sotnikova and McDougall and Taylor both cruised to 8-0 wins.
