New Waverly ISD interviewed five candidates this week for the vacant athletic director/head football coach position at New Waverly High School. According to superintendent of schools, the Bulldogs are close to naming their new man.

Clay Webb said Friday that New Waverly’s new athletic director may be named as soon as Tuesday when the school board convenes for a regular session.

“I’m hopeful we can come to a conclusion on this pretty quickly,” Webb said. “I’m hopeful that we can do something at the board meeting Tuesday night. I did put it on the board agenda as an action item, in case we decide by then.”

More than 135 people applied for the position that came open when longtime Bulldogs coach and athletic director Bob Eastland stepped down in November after 15 years on the job. Webb said his staff, together with the school board, picked six coaches from the large pool of applicants, and five of those were interviewed.

One coach pulled his name from consideration before interviewing, Webb said.

The coaches who interviewed are Ken Craig, assistant coach at Klein Oak and former defensive coordinator at The Woodlands High School; Buddy Blair, head football coach and athletic director at Union Hill High School in Gilmer; Jeff Miller, head football coach and athletic director at Jacksboro High School; Douglas Wilson, offensive coordinator at Splendora and former New Waverly High School assistant; and Charles Vincent, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Marlin High School.

Webb said he was impressed with all of the candidates who interviewed. He’s glad to have a good mixture of head coaches at small schools who are already performing athletic director duties and coordinators at larger schools who are interested in a head coaching position.

“They’re top of the mark, all five of them,” he said. “We looked at some small school head coaches and we also looked at some 3A, 4A and 5A coordinators.

“We’d certainly like to have them on board before the district realignment (on Feb. 6). We’re full speed on this, and I’m dedicating at least half a day on this until we get this wrapped up.”
