Nothing will ruin a relationship faster than attempting to teach someone how to hit a golf ball. Specifically, I’m referring to a significant other or parent/child dynamic.

When hitting a golf ball, there is generally more bad than good. And if you’re that person who has brought them out to the golf course and given them ideas or techniques that aren’t working ... you can put two and two together. Golfers I see enjoying each other’s company are rarely in a teacher/student role.

Golf can be enjoyed on many different skill levels and sometimes we feel obligated to help those around us. There’s no doubt you value the relationship you have with this person. But do them a favor and really ask yourself if you’re qualified to help someone learn this technique.

With all the best intentions, when you feel obligated to offer advice, I encourage you to stick to the fundamentals.

Here at Raven Nest we offer numerous opportunities to keep a relationship intact and enjoy the game of golf together. Each Saturday, our men’s, women’s and junior clinics are offered, and each clinic covers all aspects of the game.

The women’s clinics start the morning, running from 9 to 10 a.m., followed by the men’s session from 10:30 to 11:30, and concluding with the juniors from noon to 1 p.m.

These great ways to learn about the game are taught by Curtis Foster and Robert Thompson. Cost for men’s and women clinics is $10 per person and juniors are free.

In addition, a women’s beginner clinic taught by myself will meet May 1, 3 and 5 from 6 to 7 p.m. This is a great way to get involved and learn some of the basics of golf in an informal setting.

If playing the game is your passion, we’ve got great values for you. By joining the Men’s or Women’s Golf Association, you may come and play Mondays after 9 a.m. for just a cart fee. Additionally, we have an 18-hole handicapped game each Tuesday.

Your yearly membership also reserves you a seat at our awards banquet and establishes a USGA handicap; cost is $40.

Our best values come in the form of facility memberships. These memberships may be financed through First National Bank and start at $103.79 per month. Membership options are available and can include unrestricted range usage, green fees, and cart fees.

All memberships cover the member, spouse and qualifying dependents.
