Alpha Omega baseball

The Alpha Omega Academy Lions were recently handed down an array of All-TAPPS District 5-5A honors following a 2019 run that included a third-place league finish and a pair of postseason victories.

Alpha Omega had its entire starting nine receive all-district honors, with four players — sophomore Vanya Benson, junior Joel Balch and seniors Trey Smith and Will Stewart — earning first-team recognition.

“It just makes me really proud of the hard word they put in,” Alpha Omega head coach Glenn Wilson said. “It also shows the character that they have, which comes from their home. They have wonderful parents.”

Benson finished second overall in the all-district voting after batting .667 on the year. Balch hit .500 with two no-hitters on the mound, while Smith and Stewart batted .608 and .502, respectively.

The Lions also had two second-team selections in Jonathan Allen and Zach Taylor, while Luke Balch, Blaine Pierce and Todd Gladish were named honorable mentions.

Alpha Omega went 6-4 in district play, before winning its first postseason games by a combined score of 20-2. The Lions fell to Shiner St. Paul Catholic in the quarterfinals of the TAPPS state baseball playoffs.
