The Huntsville boys soccer team really wanted another shot at district rival Brenham.

With Nederland standing in the way in an area-round playoff game at Kingwood Park High School on Tuesday, the Hornets came out focused and got the job done.

Hugo Moncada scored a goal in the first half to lift Huntsville to a 1-0 victory.

The win sets up a rematch with the Cubs in the sectional round. The game is tentatively scheduled to take place at Tomball High School on Thursday at 6 p.m.

“Brenham beat us 1-0 both times we played them this year, but we feel good,” Hornets head coach Robert Taylor said. “We would like to play Friday to have an extra day of rest. But I don’t think it will bother us. We made one big mistake when we lost to Brenham, so we need to make sure that doesn’t happen this time around.

“They have a good defense and I think they gave up the least amount of goals in district this year. We haven’t scored against them, but we feel like we can.”

Moncada gave the Hornets (15-6-2) a quick 1-0 lead when he scored off a pass from Mark Ortega 15 minutes into the first half.

Huntsville had some other opportunities to add to its lead, but could not capitalize. It did not matter, though. The Hornets defense was too good.

“We did what we wanted to do,” Taylor said. “They did the things that we thought they would do, so the guys were ready. It was good to come out with a win. The guys are happy right now.

“We will rest up a little bit, take it easy and see if we can beat Brenham and keep moving forward on Thursday.”

Brenham (15-5-6) rolled past Beaumont Central 3-0 in the area round Monday night at Tomball High School.
