The Huntsville boys basketball team did what they needed to Friday night to keep a slim chance at making the playoffs with a 71-62 victory over Klein, but Klein Forest didn’t do its part.

The Hornets needed a win and a Klein Forest loss to sneak into the postseason Friday, but the Golden Eagles thrashed Oak Ridge 77-43 to wrap up the third and final playoff spot out of District 14-5A.

“We thought that 11-5 would get us into the playoffs at the beginning of the season, but as it stands, 12-4 was what it took to take third place,” Hornets coach Doug Anderson said. “We missed the playoffs by a total of four points — a two-point loss to Conroe and a two-point loss to Klein Collins.

“I was pleased with our effort and we just have to carry this focus over to next season.”

The Hornets took a 53-39 lead into the fourth quarter Friday before Klein got hot and hit a couple of 3-pointers in the final three minutes to get back in it. The Hornets were able to stop the rally and hold on for the victory.

Rayshadrick Johnson led Huntsville with 23 points. Drae Murray had 17. Broderick Purvis and Kyedrick Fuller finished with 13 and 9, respectively.

“I was concerned about losing to Klein Collins the other night, but the guys came out and played a great game,” Anderson said. “As soon as the opening tipoff, we had a lot of energy and played good defense against a good shooting team. We have a lot coming back to work with next season, and I’m glad we finished this year with a win.”
