Dave Bassore, defensive coordinator for the Sam Houston State University football team from 1982 to 1986, was killed Monday in a wreck on Interstate 35 in Kansas.

Bassore, 51, of Liberty, Kan., was driving north on I-35 near 18th Street Expressway about 3:20 p.m. when his pickup was clipped by a speeding Dodge Neon, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Bassore’s truck then struck the median wall, crossed all four lanes of traffic and rolled over in the right ditch.

Neither the 16-year-old driver of the Neon nor his 23-year-old passenger was injured, the highway patrol said.

Bassore resigned last month as head football coach at Olathe North High School, where coached one season at Olathe North, finishing 6-5.

Bassore, who remained at the school as a physical education teacher, was on his way home Monday when the wreck occurred, said Olathe North athletic director Jerry Banks.

Bassore was a member of Ron Randleman’s original staff at SHSU when Randleman became head coach for the Bearkats. He previously coached for Randleman at Pittsburg State (Kanas) in 1980.
