The Sam Houston State Bearkats unveiled their 2019 volleyball schedule on Friday, a slate that features marquee non-conference matchups and 11 games to be played at Johnson Coliseum.
Sam Houston State opens the season at home with the 42nd annual SHSU Invitational, scheduled for August 30-31. The Kats will take on Louisiana Tech in the season opener, before facing Prairie View A&M and Oral Roberts in the final day of the round-robin tournament.
After that, the Bearkats are off to the BYU Invitational from September 5-7, where they will face Weber State, BYU and LIU Brooklyn. The host Cougars were one of the top teams in the country throughout last season, reaching the Final Four after spending a significant portion of the year ranked No. 1.
Sam Houston State is set to take part in a tournament at Jacksonville State the following week, where it will face the Gamecocks, Stetson and Mississippi State, before closing out non-conference play against Texas State, George Washington and UTSA at the Creeds and Crest Classic in San Marcos on September 20-21.
The Bearkats’ Southland opener is September 26 on the road at Northwestern State. Their first home game of league play will be October 3 against New Orleans, with Southeastern Louisiana (October 5), Houston Baptist (October 10), Lamar (October 12) and McNeese (October 24) also coming to Huntsville.
Among the highlights of the Kats’ conference road games is a Halloween night matchup at rival Stephen F. Austin. They will close the regular season out at Southeastern Louisiana on November 16 before heading to Conway, Arkansas for the Southland Conference Tournament, which is scheduled to start November 22.
Sam Houston State, led by head coach Brenda Gray, is coming off a 22-8 season, during which it finished third in the Southland Conference with a 13-3 record. The Bearkats bring back eight players from that group — including sophomore Breanne Chausse, who was an all-conference honorable mention last year as a true freshman.
Season tickets for the 2019 season are available for $30. They can be purchased by calling the Bearkat Ticket office at 936-294-1729, or by visiting the tickets page at gobearkats.com.
