Late last month, Huntsville’s Nathan Winkelmann traveled to Bear Creek Mountain Resort in Macungie, Pennsylvania for the USA Cycling Cross-Country Mountain Bike National Championships.
Winkelmann competed in the short track race, cross-country race and super D over the four-day period. He won gold and the national championship in the super D competition and bronze in short track and cross-country.
The short track race is a seven-tenths-mile loop that is ridden for 20, minutes plus an extra three laps.
The cross-country race is a larger loop with more technical descending and an emphasis in endurance with six-mile laps done three times. Racers go up and down a ski slope with a mass start.
The super D race is mostly downhill with technical features such as rocks, roots, drop-offs, jumps, and fast turns. It is a short intense race with a small margin for error.
Nathan is a four-time national champion and has Winkelmann Training Fundamentals as his business where he coaches riders so that they can compete or just ride their bikes for exercise. Several clients participated in the national championship races with Winkelmann.
Next up for Winkelmann is a trip to Poland from Aug. 26-31 to race with Team USA in the Mountain Bike Orienteering World Championship.
