Leon R. Goodrum, 77, of Conroe, passed away Friday, June 9, 2006, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 12, at Weldon Baptist Church in Weldon, with the Rev. Larry Skero Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at Weldon Cemetery. The family wil receive visitors Monday from noon to service time at the church.

Goodrum was born Aug. 2, 1928, in Weldon to Leo Goodrum and Evelyn Capps Goodrum. He attended school in Lovelady and served in the United States Air Force from 1947 to 1951. He married Veleria Caldwell on May 7, 1949, in Weldon. He worked for the Texas Department of Corrections for seven years, was deputy sheriff for Harris County for 12 years. As the age of 45, he started his own business, L.R. Goodrum Excavation Company. He attended Harmony Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Annie Johnson, and a brother, Earl Goodrum. Leon never met a stranger. He was loved by all and will be missed by many.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Veleria Goodrum; two daughters, Annette Skero of Conroe and Debbie Cassel of Humble; a son, Roland Goodrum of Montgomery; 21 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
