John Lewis Nelson Jr., 77, put in a change of address to be with the Lord on Sept. 13, 2008.

He filled his life with love for his cherished family: Bette Nelson, his wife of 57 years and their five children and six grandchildren.

He is survived by his children, Sister Elizabeth Maria of South Africa, Loryl Miller and husband Craig of California, Terri Rose of California, Lisa Nelson of Huntsville, and Drew Nelson and wife Susan of Huntsville; six grandchildren, Starr Jones and husband D.J. of Willis, Bryan Harris of California, Brittany Miller of California, Chelsea Rose of California, and Tyler and Brenna Nelson of Huntsville.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father and three sisters.

John was a professional engineer and a certified manufacturing engineer and his career spanned many years and across the country. Along the way, many friendships were formed and his community involvement was dear to his heart.Among these were president of Pop Warner Football League, Little League Baseball, a girls gymnastics team, Huntsville Rotary and several years as president of TDCJ’s Golf Association. Oh, how he loved to play golf and puttering around the house or helping someone.

A past board member of the Chamber of Commerce, a downtown business owner and an energetic person for the start of the Huntsville Community Theatre, where they called him “St. John.”

A life well lived is a legacy of joy and pride and pleasure. A loving and lasting memory imprinted in all our hearts.A family memorial will be held at a later date at Carriage Inn, 2805 Lake Road in Huntsville.
