A new website designed to facilitate volunteer service in the community has come to Huntsville. The initiative is called “JustServe” and is intended to fill a missing link between community needs for volunteer service and those willing to serve.
Local non-profit, community, government, or faith based organizations can register and post its volunteer needs for specific projects on the website. Community members and groups can view these service opportunities and immediately sign up to volunteer.
“The goal of JustServe is to enhance the quality of life in the community by connecting those organizations needing volunteer service with those willing to provide it,” said David Payne, initiative coordinator. “In the process it will strengthen relationships among members of the community as they work together.”
Payne, former provost at Sam Houston State University, and his wife, Grettle, are coordinating the initiative in Huntsville which is jointly sponsored by SHSU’s Center for Community Engagement. The initiative plans to work in close cooperation with University clubs, fraternities and sororities.
“The University has for many years been committed to community service as evidenced by its motto ‘The measure of a life is its service.’” Payne said. “We are delighted with this program which provides Sam Houston students and other Huntsville community members a way to easily discover opportunities to serve.”
Individuals and organizations looking for service opportunities can visit the website JustServe.org and specify Huntsville, Texas in the search bar. A wide variety of service opportunities for people sign up will be shown. Individuals can then simply register, sign up and show up to the project. The organizations are notified of those who have indicated their willingness to serve and can plan accordingly.
Organizations wishing to register projects for which they need volunteers can contact David or Grettle Payne at JustServeHuntsville@gmail.com or call (936) 295-6920.
Organizations in the community that have already posted service opportunities on the site include the Boys and Girls Club, CASA, HEARTS Museum, Tall Pines Quilt Guild, Meals on Wheels, Senior Center, Rita B. Huff Animal Shelter, SAAFE House, Sam Houston Memorial Museum, YMCA, Huntsville ISD and more.
The site is serviced by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Its sole purpose is to connect community service needs with volunteers in an easy user friendly fashion and is not related the church’s proselyting efforts.
