A woman is behind bars after police discovered crack cocaine in her vehicle during a traffic stop early Wednesday morning in Huntsville.

Police say that they noticed a vehicle running at 2 a.m. at the Ridgewood West Apartments in the 2800 block of Lake Road, when they decided to perform a welfare check on the individuals in the vehicle. Officers approaching the vehicle say they immediately smelled the odor of marijuana and asked the occupants – including Ella Reece, 69, of Huntsville – to exit for a search.

When exiting the vehicle, officers say a large cloud of smoke followed. During the search, officers discovered marijuana debris throughout the car and found a crack cocaine rock on the floor.

“This was great work by officers,” HPD Lt. Jim Barnes said. “They did their due diligence by ensuring citizens were safe and also got drugs off the street.”

Reece was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and taken to the Walker County Jail. She is currently being held on $5,000 in bond.

The other passenger – later identified as Isiah Scott Jr., 29, of Huntsville – was arrested and charged with public intoxication. He is currently being held in the Walker County Jail on an undisclosed bond.
