KSAM Radio and Margarita’s Mexican Restaurant will sponsor the station’s first “Radio MASH” event on Dec. 5-6 in the Shenanigans parking lot.
According to KSAM operations manager Brooke Addams, new toys, food and items for troops stationed abroad will be collected from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Dec. 5 and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 6.
“MASH stands for ‘Make a Smile Happen,’ and that’s what we intend to do,” said Steve Everett, KSAM general manager. “We want to put smiles on the faces of those less fortunate in our community this holiday season.
“We are very excited to provide our community yet another way to support the troops — we’ll be collecting cards, letters and more.”
The event was designed to assist local organizations with their toy distributions, Addams said.
“We have worked out a distribution for some SAAFE House families in need,” she said. “The rest of the toys will go to the Santa’s Helpers toy distribution at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church, and all food donations will go to the Good Shepherd Mission.”
Items collected for troops stationed abroad will be forwarded to the Walker County Care Package Committee, which will also collect comfort items and pre-packaged snacks.
“We’ve already received manilla envelopes full of letters and hand-decorated cards for the troops,” said Addams. “It has been very touching to see what the school children have written.
“It’s my understanding that the Care Package Committee’s greatest need is money for postage — it is just under $10 per package, and they send hundreds of boxes each mailing.”
Addams said several organizations contributed to the event so far.
“We are so grateful to the Texas Army National Guard,” Addams said. “When we told them what we wanted to do, they jumped right in.
“If we work it just right, we’ll also have a Humvee for the kids to admire.”
