The Huntsville Lions Club displays more than 300 flags 13 times a year, on holidays and during special community events. Earlier this month, the Lions kicked off their annual flag project which raises money to buy new flags and poles, and to maintain and make new flag stand holes.

The Huntsville Lions Club is inviting folks to sponsor the group’s annual flag project that kicked off earlier this month.

The Lions line downtown Huntsville with United States and Texas flags on several different holidays and special occasions.

“The funds received will be used to maintain and make new flag stand holes and to purchase new flags and poles,” Huntsville Lions Club president Liesa Hackett said.

“In addition to flag maintenance, the charitable donations support academic scholarships, camp tuition for disabled and diabetic children, purchasing eyeglasses for those less fortunate and many more local charities.”

These charities are the Lions Eye Bank and Sight and Tissue Foundation, Texas Lions Camp, the SHSU Endowed Scholarship, the Walker County Fair Association and other national and international charities.

Using more than 300 flags, the Lions display the flags 13 times every year. Those occasions are Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Walker County Fair, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Presidents Day, San Jacinto Day, Flag Day, Columbus Day, Texas Independence Day, Armed Forces Day, Independence Day and Election Day.

Flag donations are requested at $25, but individuals and businesses may sponsor as many as they’d like. For more information, visit www.huntsvillelionsclub.org or the club’s Facebook page at Facebook.com/HuntsvilleTXLions.
