Lifelong Walker County resident Kari French will make a play in the March primary election for the Republican nomination for the Precinct 2 county commissioner post.

French was born in Huntsville and is a third generation resident of Walker County. Running for commissioner was spurred by her interest and involvement in her community, and a desire for a productive county government.

“Supporting and being actively involved in the community is a major element to being able to do the job effectively,” she said.

In addition to completing her Bachelor of Science Agribusiness degree from Sam Houston State University in December 2006, French is a full-time businesswoman, wife, mother and community volunteer. She is co-owner of BCS Bank Card Solutions, a local independent sales office for merchant processing — banking services.

“I have 13 years of operations management experience that has prepared me for the position of county commissioner,” she said. “As my knowledge of the workings of Walker County has grown, it has validated my desire to be a part of the growth and change of Walker County.”

French has served as president of the Huntsville Firefighters Auxiliary for the past four years, along with other volunteers, supporting the Huntsville Volunteer Fire Department with community activities, including Fair on the Square, Main Street Programs, coordinator of Sparky’s Spring Fling, fire prevention assistance as “Sparky the Fire Dog,” and most recently, the HVFD 80th anniversary celebration. She also has produced the annual HFD calendar for the past four years.

As a parent of two, French has volunteered with the Gibbs Elementary Parent Teacher Organization, Huntsville Boys Baseball Association and is a member of Elkins Lake Baptist Church.

“As county commissioner, I will work hard for the taxpayers of Walker County,” she said. “As we advance into the future, budget analysis and future planning is critical to the growth of the community. The efficient spending of taxpayer dollars for the value they possess and the safety of citizens is among my top priorities.”

French said as times change, so do the responsibilities of a county commissioner.

“A county commissioner today is much more than a ‘road commissioner.’ Today, it is a management position,” she said. “The county commissioners oversee a $14 million budget countywide. We must address funding in order to be able to provide services and meet state guidelines and standards in our judicial system as well as maintain roads and bridges to build to meet future growth.”

French has been married for nine years to John French, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice officer and volunteer firefighter with the Huntsville and Crabbs Prairie Fire Departments. They have two sons, seven-year-old Jacob and Jeffery, 5.

In the upcoming primary election, French will vie for the Republican nomination for Precinct 2 county commissioner along with incumbent Robert E. Autery, James Thomas “J.T.” Langley and Chesley “Guber” Taylor. Allan Rushing will campaign for the Democratic nomination.
