A Texas legend is heading to Huntsville to bring good times and great tunes.
Gary P. Nunn, who is considered an icon of Texas country music, will perform at Old Town Theatre Saturday, June 1 at 7 p.m. Nunn has performed for 40 years with the likes of Willie Nelson, Michael Martin Murphey and Jerry Jeff Walker.
“Nunn is considered by most to be the ‘father’ of the progressive movement in country music,” said organizer Cheryl Eschenfelder. “His new sound and songwriting skills brought country music into the mainstream, blended country with pop, put it on mainstream radio and gave it an international life.”
Nunn has appeared on TV shows like “Austin City Limits,” the "Texas Music Scene" and “Nashville Now” as well as regular performances at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo. Nunn has also performed worldwide and is beloved in Europe.
“This is Gary P.’s last year to tour,” Eschenfelder added. “His fans all around the world are turning out in record numbers to hear him, and we were so lucky that he agreed to come here to Old Town Theatre on his farewell tour.”
Nunn has also earned a number of notable awards and honors over the years. He was named an Official Ambassador to the World by Texas Governor Mark White and later Governor Rick Perry declared him an Ambassador of Texas Music. In 2004, Nunn was inducted into the Texas Hall of Fame.
“Gary has been honored by governors, been names into the hall of fame and named a Texas Treasure,” Eschenfelder said. “We are so excited to host him.”
