A Beaumont man has been charged from a Sunday morning crash that left one dead in Huntsville.

Emmanuel Avila, 32, of Beaumont was charged with intoxicated manslaughter after police say he was driving erratically down Lake Road and crashed into a sign — killing his passenger.

Police say they received a call at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning with citizens reporting a car driving erratically and speeding down the residential road in southern Huntsville. Shortly after the call came in to dispatch, the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a sign on the passenger’s side – killing the victim instantly.

The driver and another passenger were taken to Huntsville Memorial Hospital, while a third passenger left the scene, but was later located by authorities. Police say that neither of the surviving passengers will face any charges.

“This was a very unfortunate situation,” HPD Lt. Jim Barnes said. “I hope this shows why we go after drunk driving so heavily.”

Avila was released from the Walker County Jail Monday on a $100,000 bond.
