Aldine ISD will name new school after Huntsville native Marine Jones

Submitted photoA new middle school in the Aldine district will be named for former Huntsville resident and Sam Houston State University graduate Marine Jackson Jones.

Marine Jones was surprised when she heard the news. The Aldine Independent School District soon would be naming a school in her honor.

“It was a total shock and my expression indicated the same,” said Jones, who grew up in the Mt. Zion community near Huntsville. “It is an honor for Aldine to recognize me for such an honor after being involved in some capacity in the district since 1960. It is my hope that this recognition can be an inspiration for future generations in Huntsville.”

The Aldine Independent School District Board of Trustees will open Marine D. Jones Middle School in Humble for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders this August.

Jones graduated from Sam Houston High School in Huntsville in 1955. After graduating, she attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins. She later attended Sam Houston State University and earned a Master of Education degree in 1969.

Jones devoted 38 years of her life to Aldine ISD as a school secretary, teacher, librarian and school counselor. After retiring in 1998, she was appointed to the Board of Trustees in February 2002, and elected in May of the same year.

During her 10-year tenure as a trustee, she held all four school board offices and served on numerous committees.

Jones has lived in the Aldine community for almost 50 years where she continues to attend athletic events and other school and community activities.

Her only child, Marcie Jones Strahan, graduated from Aldine High School and earned a Master of Education degree in health and kinesiology and a Master of Arts degree from SHSU. She is currently an assistant principal at Benjamin O. Davis Jr. Senior High School in Aldine ISD. Her husband, Steve Strahan, earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Baylor University and Master of Education degree in education administration from Prairie View A&M University. He teaches and coaches at MacArthur High School.

As a retired educator, Mrs. Jones also spends time at her home when she is not involved in school and church activities in Houston. She is a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church where Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Davis is the pastor.
