While many people rang in the new year by drinking champagne, staying up late and singing “Auld Lang Syne,” Belinda Silcox spent her holiday taking a late-night trip to Huntsville Memorial Hospital to give birth to her first child, Noah Edgar Darius Silcox.

Noah was the first baby born at HMH in 2006 and came into this world at 1:56 p.m. Monday, weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces and was 20 inches long.

Not only does Noah have the unique distinction of being the first baby born at HMH in 2006, but he is a third-generation HMH baby in the Silcox family.

“I was born here, my dad’s first child, and my dad was born here and he was my grandma’s first child,” Belinda said. “We were all born in the same hospital. I had to carry on the tradition.”

Belinda said Tuesday her newborn is in great health and has been very well-behaved.

“He sees well and he doesn’t cry very much,” she said. “He’s been through a lot with everybody holding him, but he’s good-tempered.”

Even though Noah was born close to New Year’s Day, Belinda didn’t realize he was the first baby of 2006 until one of the nurses told her.

“I was shocked, because I figured they already had one.” Belinda said. “I was so excited, because I knew I would be getting his picture in the paper. I want to show everybody my baby.”

Belinda said she received a great deal of support from her two nurses, Susan Grace and Violet Martin.

“They really helped me,” she said. “If they hadn’t calmed me down, I probably would have been cursing or something.”

The Silcox family headed home to Crabbs Prairie on Tuesday, where Belinda said she will be enjoying the new addition in her life.

“I’ll just be getting used to being a mom and getting the house situated,” she said.

Michael and Doris Silcox are the proud grandparents and Belinda said her cousin, Mary Lang, will be Noah’s godmother and her brother, Michael Silcox Jr., will be his godfather.

Belinda was presented with a gift basket valued at $200 from HMH for having the first baby of the year. The basket is full of items for both Belinda and Noah, including an El Chico gift card, foaming body wash, complimentary sitting fee and choice of portraits from Gathright Studio, a baby spoon, an infant gown, hat, booties and bib and a musical toy cow.
