Huntsville Mayor Andy Brauninger awarded a proclamation to local World War II veteran Maize Warren. Warren served in the military for nearly four years and was one of the few African Americans from Huntsville to be deployed to Tuskegee, Ala., during the war. Warren was sent to Tuskegee at age 19, serving with some of the first African-American pilots. He would spend eight months in Tuskegee, before being sent to fight in Italy for 14 months, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Warren was not an airman himself, serving in security.
