Summer Repertory Theatre

The Sam Houston State University Department of Theatre and Dance Summer Repertory Company presents “The Swan,” by Elizabeth Egloff, this Friday and Saturday, “The Last Days of Judas Iscariot,” by Stephen Adly Guirgis, this Sunday and Monday, and “Regrets Only,” by Paul Rudnick this Tuesday and Aug 6. Each production will take place in the University Theatre Center Showcase Theatre at 8 p.m. General admission is $5 and may be purchased at the door the evening of the show. Clothing drive

Huntsville Youth Council's is holding a clothing drive for clothes that meet the standardized dress code of HISD until Aug. 15. Clothing can now also be dropped off at First Baptist Church and Church of Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints.

The Sons of the American Legion will host its annual barbecue sandwich sale on Friday. Included in the $5 cost is a chopped beef sandwhich with pickle and onion, if desired, chips and one canned drink. Pre-sale begins July 28. Jubilee Carnival at the library

The Jubilee Carnival is a free family night of activities sponsored by the Huntsville Public Library and Recreational Services. The Carnival will include games, family activities and food and drink. Fish fry

Huntsville Knights of Columbus will have its monthly fish fry on Friday from 5 -7 p.m. The menu is fried fish, french fries, hush puppies, fried okra, cole slaw and iced tea. Gibbs Powell Home Museum lunch

The Walker County Historical Commission is sponsoring a lunch fundraiser on Friday from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the Gibbs Powell Home Museum, located at 1228 Eleventh Street. The American Legion, Sam Houston Post 95, located off of FM 2821 at,1919 Industrial Drive, will hold the, “First Saturday of the Month Dance,” featuring the “High Riders”, on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. There is no cover charge. This is the first dance at the Legion’s new location and it is open to the public.

Benefit playday and ranch rodeo

Aug. 9 at the Rising Sun Cowboy Arena in Trinity, there will be a benefit held for Leslee Sallee. The playday begins at 9 a.m. and the ranch rodeo starts at 5 p.m. The playday cost is $10 per event, or $35 for an all-day pass. The rodeo cost is $50 a person; teams consist of four people. HHS cheer camp

Girls and boys ages 3 to 12 are invited to attend Huntsville High School’s cheer camp on Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at HHS. Payment in full of $20 per camper is due before camp begins and advanced registration is due Aug. 1 via U.S. mail or drop off at either Huntsville High School or the Chamber of Commerce. The price includes a T-shirt. Onsite registration will be available to those who cannot complete the paperwork by Aug. 1, though this may delay the campers start and T-shirt sizes may be limited. Campers should wear shorts and tennis shoes, have their hair up, and bring lunch and their own lunch and beverages.



Country and western dance

New Waverly Public Library garage sale

On Aug. 9 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the New Waverly Public Library, located at Highway 75 S, will hold a garage sale. Freshman orientation at SHSU

The date for freshman orientation is set for Aug. 13. There will be two sessions; session I is the morning from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and for females only ; session II, the afternoon session, is from 1:30 to 5 p.m. and is for males only. There is a morning and afternoon meeting for parents that same day at 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. in the Huntsville High School auditorium. Orientation will be presented in workshop style, and students need to bring highlighters and something to write with. Refreshments provided.



Special access to historic map and obituary databases

Huntsville Public Library and Walker County Genealogical Society will host an annual summer lock-in on Aug. 15 from 5-9 p.m. at the library, 1216 14th Street. Special access to two new databases has been arranged for the lock-in. Door prizes will be awarded and refreshments provided.

Outdoor Explorer

The Huntsville State Park will offer classes to learn basic safety for biking, hiking and kayaking and exploring the State Park with backpacks, bikes and kayaks provided for you. Class sizes are limited to 30 and pre-registration is required. Program dates include: today, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Ages 12 and up can register with an attending parent or guardian.
