Two sophomores and three freshmen from Huntsville’s Alpha Omega Academy beat the heat and the rest of the field at a Class A regional golf tournament in San Antonio on Tuesday.

Led by freshman Jon Strong, who won medalist honors with a sizzling 84, the Lions finished first at the regional played at the historic Pecan Valley Golf Club and earned a berth in next week’s state tournament.

“We’ve got some good kids who have the talent to be really good golfers,” Lions coach Skelly Strong said late Tuesday night. “That 360 is a good score on an extremely hard golf course. It was 103 degrees, which was a record high today, and our guys played well in that heat.”

In addition to Jon Strong’s 84, AOA freshman Billy Chesnut fired an 87 and finished second in the individual standings. Sophomore Alfredo Muskus shot a 93, sophomore Nolan Williamson had a 98 and freshman Austin Lyle turned in a 103.

With a 362 team total, the Lions blew away the rest of the field. The second-place team finished 30 strokes behind Alpha Omega Academy, according to Strong.

The Lions will play Monday and Tuesday in the TAPPS Class A state tournament, and coach Strong believes they will make another strong showing at Oakhurst Golf Club in Porter.

“We’re going to go over there and play a practice round Saturday,” he said. “We’ve been practicing five days a week at Elkins (Lake) and Raven Nest. We can shoot an even lower score if everybody plays to their potential.”
