LADY HORNETS GOLF — Huntsville girls bounce back, finish as tourney runner-up

HUNTSVILLE — After a rough day on the course Friday, the Lady Hornets were determined to make up for it in the final round at Raven Nest Golf Club.

Seniors Courtney Tibiletti and Hannah Valentine recovered from their 80-plus scores in the first round with scores in the 70s on Saturday.

The Lady Hornets were able to capitalize, improving by 12 shots to card a 314 on Saturday and finish in second place behind The Woodlands’ top team in the Huntsville Girls Spring Classic.

“It used to be amazing for us, shooting 314. I know we all weren’t at our best today, which is kind of a positive thing in my opinion,” Tibiletti said. “We know it’s not our best. We know we can do a lot better.

“It happens a lot where I play bad the first day and I just get angry. I want to come back and show what I can do the second day, so that’s basically what I did.”

Valentine regrouped from her opening-round 83 with a 75 on Saturday and Tibiletti bounced back from shooting an 86 and fired a 4-over-par 74 to finish fifth and sixth, respectively.

“I started out with two bogeys and I know I can do better than that, so I got really focused and I didn’t even look at my scorecard. I just kept going hole by hole, shot by shot,” Valentine said.

“I was more accurate today. I took more time and didn’t get flustered. I shook it off pretty easily.”

Casey Leatherman shot an 82, while Paige Weiss turned in 83 and Reece Haralson had a 96.

The Lady Hornets finished with a 326-314 — 640 score. They were bested only by The Woodlands’ A team (304-290 — 594).

The Woodlands’ B team shot a 333-323 — 656 to place third.

“We putted better today and I think all of them played pretty solidly,” said Huntsville assistant golf coach Danny Leatherman. “Paige played better than what her score ended up being. They did what good teams do and came back. That’s the way golf is. You don’t play well every day.

“We went toe-to-toe with The Woodlands and their first and second teams are some of the best around. Beating their second team and beating them heads up both days says a lot about our program.”

Huntsville’s B team of Jordan Jeter, Mason Garner, Grace Manning and Skylarr Sullivan finished with a 449-407 — 856 to place sixth.

One of the areas that caused the Lady Hornets some problems on Friday was their short game.

A little extra practice time made all the difference.

“Yesterday, it was just the putting that was the root of all my problems,” Tibiletti said. “I went home and just stayed on the putting green until dark.”

The Lady Hornets have a short turnaround and will kick off the District 18-4A girls tournament on Tuesday at High Meadow Ranch in Magnolia.

“I know we can do better. I know we’ll be at our tip-top shape for district coming up on Tuesday and Wednesday,” Tibiletti added.
