ALPHA OMEGA ACADEMY BASEBALL — Lions prevail with 2-1 victory over Covenant Christian

HUNTSVILLE — Alpha Omega Academy is off to a hot start in the district baseball schedule.

After rallying from two runs down for a three-run victory against Orange Christian last Tuesday in the district opener, the Lions came out on top again with a 2-1 win Friday against a scrappy Convenant Christian group.

Once again, Tucker Harris led the Lions from the mound giving up only one unearned run and dealing eight strikeouts in seven innings of work.

“Tucker has just done a great job pitching for us in these first two district games,” Alpha Omega coach Bert Lyle said.

Lyle thought the Lions had enough to win the game just on Nathan Hsaio’s run scored that was on a passed ball in the third inning. Hsaio had walked to get on base and stole second and third before making it home.

Then in the top of the seventh inning, an error at second base allowed a Convenant Christian run to score and tie the game at 1.

In the bottom half of the inning, Lane Smith singled up the middle to bring in the Lions’ decisive run.

Bryson Shiflet made the defensive play of the game for Alpha Omega, robbing a play that was hit to right-center field.

“The plays that Bryson made, those are the ones that just get you excited,” Lyle said. “It was a really well-played game. Both pitchers did well and there was really good defense all the way around. We did have the one error that scored the tying run, but the guys just battled and stuck with it.

“We’ve talked about mental toughness and these guys are really starting to get there. With the way we’ve come back, either down or tied in these first two district games, it says a lot about how much they’ve matured.

“It’s a blessing to be able to watch these young men grow. Mental toughness comes with realizing this is just a game and you’ve got to allow yourself to be free to play it.”

The Lions return to action Tuesday when they host Magnolia Legacy Prep at 4 p.m.
