NEW WAVERLY BASEBALL — Bulldogs face Clifton at Mexia in area playoff round

HUNTSVILLE — New Waverly and Clifton begin a best-of-three series in Mexia on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs baseball team advanced to the area round of Class 2A playoff action last week after sweeping Blooming Grove in Franklin.

New Waverly won a 1-0 pitcher’s duel in the first game last Thursday, then followed it up with a 5-4 victory Friday.

For pitching, the Dogs will rely on senior ace Troy Roberts in the first game, and likely his classmate Marshall Goodwin in the second game Saturday at 3 p.m.

If necessary, the Dogs of District 24 and Cubs of District 21 will play a third and decisive game following Saturday’s tilt.

The Bulldogs are pumped about being back in the playoff picture after missing out last season.

Rookie head coach Chase Ledyard, who starred at Huntsville seven years ago, brought new energy to the team.

“If we can hit the way we’ve been hitting and our pitchers can have no walks to two walks a game and make no errors, we give ourselves a chance,” Ledyard said.

Sam Houston State football coach K.C. Keeler made it a point to talk up his quarterbacks this offseason, although he admitted after practice on Thursday that he’s not thrilled with the progress his signal callers have made during the first week of training camp.
Keeler has gone on the record on multiple occasions to say sophomores Don King III and Jared Johnson have as good of a skill set as any quarterback in the Southland, but Keeler acknowledges that the position will remain a gigantic question mark for Sam Houston until someone decides to run away with the competition.
