NEW WAVERLY BASEBALL — Bulldogs advance to area round

HUNTSVILLE — New Waverly’s baseball team is headed to the second round of Class 2A playoff action following Friday night’s 5-4 victory over Blooming Grove in Franklin.

The Bulldogs swept the best-of-three series with the win Friday and a 1-0 decision Thursday night.

This time, senior Marshall Goodwin took the mound for New Waverly and gave up only one run in his three innings of work.

Aaron Martin came in relief to close out the game.

New Waverly head coach Chase Ledyard said the Bulldogs hit the ball a lot better Friday night.

Junior second baseman Chaz Jackson went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Adam Postel went 2-for-3 with an RBI and R.C. Wilkerson recorded the same line offensively.

“We just hit the ball really well and Marshall did good job pitching for us,” Ledyard said. “Aaron came in and finished the game and he did a nice job as well. With the exception of a few errors we had that allowed some runners to score, we were pretty good out there tonight. I was proud of our guys.”

Just down the road, Clifton defeated Cameron Yoe and will be the Bulldogs’ next opponent.

The teams will play a best-of-three series beginning Friday, with a possible doubleheader Saturday if Friday’s winner loses the second game.

Ledyard said a location will be determined early next  week.
