SHSU SOFTBALL — Bearkats split doubleheader in Corpus Christi

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston split a Southland Conference softball doubleheader with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday on the road.

The Islanders won the first game 4-3. The Bearkats took the nightcap 10-3. The two teams will meet in the third and final game of the series today at noon in Corpus Christi.

Both squads had fielding problems Saturday as they combined for seven errors during the doubleheader. Four Bearkat errors were responsible for all four Islander unearned runs in the 4-3 loss in the opener.

Running for Hillary Adams after the designated player walked in the second inning, Jennie Kieval gave Sam Houston a 1-0 lead scoring on an Islander error.

A&M-Corpus Christi took the lead with three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Tayler Gray’s two-run single with two outs pulled Sam Houston to within a run of forcing extra innings but the Kats could not get another run across.

Shelby Lancaster (9-8) took the loss, only the senior righthander’s second loss in Southland Conference play this season.

The Bearkats started the nightcap with an eight-run outburst in the first. Sam Houston totaled the eight runs on three hits and three Islander errors. Gray’s RBI double and a run-scoring single by right fielder Cecilia Castillo accounted for three of the runs. The other tallies came on a pair of errors, two wild pitches and a passed ball.

Gray picked up her fourth RBI of the day in the top of the fourth with a single through the left side of the infield to score second baseman Alyssa Coggins. The senior infielder doubled with one out.

A&M-Corpus Christi avoided the run-rule, picking up three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single and a two-run double.

First baseman Sarah Allison accounted for the final SHSU run in the top of the seventh as she walked and later scored on a ground ball by Coggins.

Haley Baros earned the victory in the circle in relief.
