HUNTSVILLE BASEBALL — Hornets upset Brenham in final road game

Huntsville rallies from two runs down, takes 7-4 victory over district leader

HUNTSVILLE — All of a sudden, the Huntsville baseball team is on a roll. The Hornets figure it’s better late than never.

Since getting off to a rough 1-10 start in district play this season, Huntsville has rattled off three wins in its last four games and two in a row after Tuesday night’s 7-4 road victory against district leader Brenham.

The Cubs were 13-1 in district action going into Tuesday’s game, but the Hornets had their own momentum coming off a 5-4 win last Thursday against Waller, their second straight home victory after defeating Caney Creek on April 11.

Huntsville fell behind early in this one. Brenham held a 2-0 lead after three innings and 4-2 after four.

But the Hornets came back to tie the game with another pair of runs in the fifth inning, took the lead with two more in the sixth and junior third baseman Hoke Byrd’s solo home run in the seventh inning was just for good measure.

Huntsville picked up the win despite committing six errors on defense.

“We’ve had some things go our way the last couple of games and we came into this one with something to build on,” Huntsville coach Brad Bohannon said. “The kids are starting to show some confidence and like I’ve said all year, they never quit. These guys keep fighting and I’m really proud of them for that.

“Defensively, we didn’t have our best game, but when you’re hitting the ball well and playing with confidence, the errors don’t catch up with you as much.”

Byrd went 4-for-4 on the night along with his solo shot. Barrett Koerselman and catcher Tanner Holly also recorded a pair of hits for the Hornets.

Drayton Pittman pitched the entire seven innings for Huntsville, giving up four runs and none of them earned.
