SHSU BASEBALL — Bearkats drop finale, series to Lamar

Sam Houston State unable to hold onto lead, drops third Southland Conference series

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston baseball team was unable to get the timely hits when it really mattered, late in the game down by just one run. As a result, the Bearkats lost to Lamar 6-5 in the rubber match of the series on Saturday in Beaumont.

The series loss to the Cardinals was the third occurrence in conference play this season. The Bearkats (10-8 in Southland Conference, 26-14 overall) look to rebound against nationally ranked Houston on Tuesday on the road.

The Cardinals scored in the first inning, just as they did in every game of the series, to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bearkats were able to grab the lead right back with three runs in the top of the second.

With two on and two outs, Kats left fielder Luke Plucheck singled to score third baseman Carter Burgess. Center fielder Colt Atwood had the big hit with a two-RBI double to right center.

Lamar tied the game on an RBI-groundout in the third inning. The Kats took a 4-3 lead thanks to a Lamar error in the fifth.

Bearkats starting pitcher Sam Odom issued a pair of one-out walks in the bottom of the fifth and was replaced by reliever Alan Scott. The tall lefty allowed three runs on three singles to give Lamar a 6-3 lead.

Sam Houston had a great chance to get the runs back in the top of the sixth.

After second baseman Shea Pierce doubled and catcher Hunter Courson singled, the Kats had runners on the corners with one out. Sam Houston could only manage one run on a fielder’s choice groundout by Plucheck.

Bearkats first baseman Ryan O’Hearn doubled to lead off the seventh, but was stranded. Shortstop Corey Toups led off the eighth with a walk and was sacrificed to second, but the Kats couldn’t get him around.

The top of the order was retired in order in the ninth inning to end the game.

Sam Houston returns to Don Sanders Stadium next weekend for another crucial league series against first-place Southeastern Louisiana, set to begin Friday at 6:30 p.m.

At the end of the Sam Houston State football team’s first preseason practice Monday at Bowers Stadium, new head coach K.C. Keeler told his players that they “did O.K.” There were dropped passes, missed assignments and errant throws from starters and backups alike. But there were also incredible displays of athleticism, as well as a sense of urgency from players hoping to win a starting job.
The fate of Sam Houston’s season could rest on the arm of whoever emerges as the team’s starting quarterback. On Monday,  sophomore Don King III played with the first team, but sophomore Jared Johnson and redshirt freshman John Roderique each saw a comparable number of reps.
