New Waverly boys, girls qualify for Region III meet

HUNTSVILLE — Four New Waverly track and field athletes qualified for this week’s Class 2A Region III meet at Wildcat Stadium in Whitehouse after distinguishing themselves as some of the best in District 24-2A.

For the Lady Bulldogs, junior Ashley Parks won gold in the long jump and 100-meter dash and also taking silver in the triple jump and 200 meters.

Sophomore Essence Hall placed third in the 400 meters and advanced to the regional meet as an alternate.

Parks posted a 13.26-second time in the 100-meter-dash and jumped 16 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the long jump, respectively, to take first in both events. She ran the 200 meters in 27.41 seconds and tallied 35 feet in the triple jump for a pair of runner-up finishes.

Hall’s third-place finish came with a time of 1:06.53.

Seniors Michael McBride and Kasey Spivey represent the Bulldogs as regional qualifiers in the high jump and 800 meters, respectively.

McBride won silver at the District 24-2A meet in Franklin after clearing 6 feet and eventually 6 feet, 2 inches, which was a personal best. Spivey placed third in the 800 with time of 2:09.29.

“I’m just really proud of all our athletes for the work they’ve put in,” New Waverly boys coach Kevin Ward said.

“They compete to make it to this point and hopefully advance even further to state, so we’re encouraging these kids to their absolute best and that’s really all you can ask for.”

The Class 2A Region III track and field meet will be held this Friday and Saturday in Whitehouse.
