SHSU FOOTBALL — Former Kats gear up for pro day at Bowers Stadium

HUNTSVILLE — Some former Bearkat football stars get the chance to showcase their skills in front of NFL scouts at today’s pro day.

Running back Timothy Flanders, wide receivers Torrance Williams, Trey Diller and Richard Sincere and defensive back Darnell Taylor among the players who look to impress scouts starting at 11 a.m. today at Bowers Stadium.

Flanders is a two-time Southland Conference Player of the Year (2011, ‘12). Williams was the Bearkats’ top receiver in 2013, finishing with 964 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on 55 catches.

Sincere, the league’s “Offensive Player of the Year” in 2011 when the Kats made their first national championship appearance, played both wide receiver and lined up behind center in the “wild Bearkat” (option) formation.

Diller and Taylor are both a year removed from their days with the Bearkats.

Both were key contributors to the 2012 team that went to the national championship game for a second straight year.

Taylor was a two-time All-American as a safety before injuring his knee in the second national championship game.

At the end of the Sam Houston State football team’s first preseason practice Monday at Bowers Stadium, new head coach K.C. Keeler told his players that they “did O.K.” There were dropped passes, missed assignments and errant throws from starters and backups alike. But there were also incredible displays of athleticism, as well as a sense of urgency from players hoping to win a starting job.
The fate of Sam Houston’s season could rest on the arm of whoever emerges as the team’s starting quarterback. On Monday,  sophomore Don King III played with the first team, but sophomore Jared Johnson and redshirt freshman John Roderique each saw a comparable number of reps.
