SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT — The Bearkats really want to play Oral Roberts

HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston State and Oral Roberts men’s basketball teams are not chummy with each other.

There was a hard-fought matchup between the two in last season’s Southland Conference tournament, which resulted in the sixth-seed Bearkats coming away with a 58-55 upset victory over the third-seed Golden Eagles to advance to the semifinal round.

Since then, the two teams played March 1, but this time Oral Roberts came out on top by seven points.

When asked about the matchup with Sam Houston following a 66-62 win against McNeese State on Wednesday, Oral Roberts guard Korey Billbury said, “I’m not going to worry about it. They have to beat us, really.”

Billbury scored a game-high 29 points against the Bearkats on March 1.

At practice earlier this week, Bearkats senior forward Terrance Motley didn’t let on to a preference of playing either the Golden Eagles or McNeese.

But redshirt freshman Dakarai Henderson gave some insight into the team’s intentions if the opportunity presented itself.

“With Oral Roberts, we’re looking for that rematch because up there they were talking a lot and it was a good way to end their season,” Henderson said. “But we still should’ve won that game. We had one turnover too many, missed too many layups. Basically, things we’re capable of doing we didn’t do that night. We fell asleep on them but we ain’t sleeping anymore.”
