Huntsville powerlifters impress at state meet

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville’s three state qualifiers in powerlifting all came home with top 15 finishes in their respective weight classes.

Junior Parker Blount placed seventh in the 242-pound division with a total lift of 1,610 pounds.

Blount recorded a 625-pound squat, 400 pounds on the bench press with a 585-pound deadlift.

Huntsville head coach Brad Surley called Blount a “coach’s dream” for the hardwork and attitude he brings to the team.

“He’s a leader but he’s also one of those kids that’s going to do whatever you ask him to do,” Surley said.

Sophomore Des Johnson, in just his first season powerlifting and at the encouragement of Surley before the season, placed 12th in the super-heavyweight division.

Johnson posted a 650-pound squat, 475 pounds on the bench press and 525 on deadlift for a total score of 1,650.

“It’s tremendously hard to make it to state in your first year,” Surley said. “I’m just really proud of him.”

Lady Hornets senior Kamilla Wanza placed seventh at the March 15 meet in Corpus Christi.

Wanza recorded a 280-pound squat, 140-pound bench press and 350-pound deadlift for a 770 total. Surley said Wanza is one of the best deadlifters he’s ever coached.

“I just appreciate all of the supports from parents and the hard work from our students,” Surley said. It’s been a real pleasure to coach these kids.
