HUNTSVILLE SOCCER — Hornets dominate

Huntsville boys soccer team blanks New Caney, 4-0

HUNTSVILLE — The Hornets were in complete control during Wednesday night’s 4-0 victory against New Caney.

There were not many chances for Huntsville in the first five minutes, but the Hornets quickly got things rolling about 10 minutes into the game.

Alejandro Ramirez scored on an assist from Luis Blanco, who knocked in another goal in the second half that put Huntsville up by three.

Goalkeeper Fernando Varela also provided much-needed defense, which his teammates credited for saving at least two goals by New Caney.

Overall, the Hornets put in a dominate performance on the home field.

“I saw the space open. They left the middle (of the field) all open,” Blanco said of his assist to Ramirez. “So I took a chance to try to go to the middle and then when I saw my teammate running inside, I gave him that through ball so he could score. They were leaving the middle open so I took advantage of that.”

Blanco wasn’t done there.

In the second half, Blanco was driving toward another goal for the Hornets when he stumbled over a New Caney defender. However, Prospero Ortiz was there to clean it up and score.

Blanco added to Huntsville’s point total eight minutes later

Huntsville coach Robert Taylor said Blanco’s goal was a sign of the junior turning into a player who will be difficult for other teams to deal with.

Opponents are having to defend Blanco differently because of his quickness and decision-making in quick moments.

“I think this is the best game he’s played so far this year,” Taylor said. “Not saying he hasn’t played well at other times, but his ability to beat a defender once he’s received the ball, to kind of receive the ball with his back to the goal and then put himself in a situation where he can now face the goal gives us such an advantage back there because most defenders can’t run with him and they won’t try. He’s gotten much better.”

The Hornets are back on the field Friday when they travel to Willis.
