Huntsville will play a fundraiser game against Conroe at Minute Maid Park

HUNTSVILLE — Ten days from now, Huntsville High School’s varsity baseball team gets a unique opportunity. The Hornets take on the Conroe Tigers at Minute Maid Park.

The Hornets have 500 ticket vouchers for sale at $27 apiece. The vouchers are good for admission to next Friday’s scrimmage, plus any Houston Astros home game this season with the exception of the season-opening series against the New York Yankees.

If next week’s scrimmage sells out, Huntsville’s baseball program will be awarded a $3,500 check from the Astros.

Hornets head coach Brad Bohannon is still new on the job, but he knows his team could certainly use the money to upgrade various equipment.

“They ended up giving us 500 ticket vouchers and they’re redeemable for any Astros home series, excluding the first weekend series against the Yankees,” Bohannon said Monday. “So anything after that, those vouchers can be redeemed. As far as the seats themselves, they are the right-field bullpen lower level section.”

A representative from the Houston Astros contacted Bohannon about Huntsville participating in the Youth Baseball Showcase.

Bohannon didn’t hesitate on working out the logistics.

“I knew it was going to be an awesome opportunity for our kids to play at Minute Maid and even for us as a coaching staff to get a chance to coach at Minute Maid,” Bohannon said. “It’s like I told the kids, it’s a dream come true.

“There are guys who play in the minor leagues forever who don’t get the chance to actually play on a Major League Baseball field. So it’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
