BREAKING: Huntsville announces finalists for Hornets football head coach

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville has settled on three finalists for the Hornets'  vacant head football coach and boys athletic director positions. Superintendent Dr. Steve Johnson told The Item on Monday afternoon that the finalists are Pflugerville Connally head coach Howard McMahan, Athens head coach Paul Essary and Belton head coach Rodney Southern.

HISD Board of Trustees will call a special meeting Thursday at noon to approve a new head coach.

"All three are current head coaches and have experience," Johnson said. "They've had a lot of great success. Overall, the records for those three have been good. What I'm finding out as I check the references on them, they run good, quality programs and the interview team that brought me those three names would be comfortable with any one of the three."

Huntsville has been searching for a new head coach since Shane Martin was asked to resign in November following the Hornets' disappointing 2-8 season in 2013.

Be sure to check Tuesday's edition of The Huntsville Item for more information.

At the end of the Sam Houston State football team’s first preseason practice Monday at Bowers Stadium, new head coach K.C. Keeler told his players that they “did O.K.” There were dropped passes, missed assignments and errant throws from starters and backups alike. But there were also incredible displays of athleticism, as well as a sense of urgency from players hoping to win a starting job.
The fate of Sam Houston’s season could rest on the arm of whoever emerges as the team’s starting quarterback. On Monday,  sophomore Don King III played with the first team, but sophomore Jared Johnson and redshirt freshman John Roderique each saw a comparable number of reps.
