ALPHA OMEGA BASEBALL — Lions lose tough battle in playoffs

HUNTSVILLE — Alpha Omega Academy was close to knocking off the top-ranked baseball team in TAPPS 2A, but couldn’t quite finish the deal in Monday’s second round matchup against First Baptist Christian of Pasadena.

The Lions lost 6-5, despite outhitting their opponent 10-5.

A wild pitch and RBI single by Nathan Hsiao in the fifth inning tied the game at two runs apiece.

First Baptist regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning when the Lions walked the leadoff hitter and and two-out RBI single gave the Warriors a 3-2 advantage.

The Lions rallied and held a 5-3 lead halfway through the seventh inning after a single by Lane Smith.

But First Baptist had fortune go its way.  The Warriors scored two runs on an error, then a base hit ended the Lions’ season.

Alpha Omega head coach Bert Lyle called it “a blessing and a half to coach the players throughout the season and watch them develop.

“We outplayed them, but just gave them a couple of breaks at the end of the game,” Lyle said.

Uncertainty isn’t always a precursor to unmitigated disaster. The Sam Houston State football team will enter the 2014 season with a new coaching staff, new offensive and defensive schemes and a plethora of new faces competing for starting jobs that were vacated by players who helped lead the program to three consecutive playoff appearances.
The schedule is daunting, but  it’s not out of the question for the Bearkats to go undefeated in conference play this fall. The roster is young and relatively inexperienced, but there are talented players on the depth chart who have not yet had an opportunity to showcase their skills. There are plenty of reasons to temper expectations for 2014, but also many reasons to hope the Bearkats can win the games they are supposed to win and find their way to the playoffs again.
