Sam Houston State junior golfer Zach Cabra has been named to the PING All-Central Region team, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced last Thursday. Cabra is one of two Southland players named to the all-region teams, joining Central Arkansas’ Pep Angles.
Cabra is the first Bearkat to earn Division I PING All-Region honors. He was also named the Southland Conference’s newcomer of the year after a stellar first season for the Bearkats.
The McKinney product, who appeared in 12 tournaments and placed in the top 10 six times, including wins at the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate last September, the Sam Houston Harold Funston Invitational last October and the Southland Conference championship.
His three individual wins are the most in the conference. The junior averaged 72.03 strokes per round and recorded a league-low round of 62 at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate hosted by Southern Mississippi last September, helping him earn first-team all-conference accolades.
Cabra was only one of two golfers to shoot par or better in all three rounds of the league tournament and finished 6-under par (69-69-72 — 210).
A total of 157 players across six regions (Northeast, East, Southeast, Midwest, Central and West) earned all-region honors for 2014.
