HUNTSVILLE SWIMMING — Hornets give full effort in Region 5 swim meet

Bitara holding out hope for call-up spot to state meet

HUNTSVILLE — The Hornets gave it all they had at the Region 5 swimming meet in Magnolia this weekend. With 16 of their 24 swimmers advancing from the District 20-4A meet two weeks, Huntsville’s swimmers had their eyes set on doing their best to advance to state competition.

Senior Andrew Bitara had the highest finish for the Hornets, earning fourth place in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:46.49. Bitara was 10th in the 200 freestyle, posting a 1:49.21.

Despite the fourth-place finish, Bitara can still earn a trip to the UIL Swimming and Diving State Meet. He needs to have one of the eight fastest times without winning a regional championship in order to earn a call-up spot to the state meet, which is scheduled for Feb. 21 and 22 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin on the campus of the University of texas.

In the boy’s 200 relay medley, Bitara along with Mason English, Jomar Pueyo and T.J. Dawson placed ninth with a 1:45.41 posting.

English was 14th in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 23.56 seconds.

The 200 freestyle relay girls team of Kelsey Hill, Sara McClanahan Logan Beverly and Jesslin Castilleja posted a time of 1:45.94 to finish in seventh place.

Beverly placed eighth in the individual 50 freestyle with a time of 25.4 seconds. Beverly was 11th in the 100 butterfly with a 1:03.68 posting. In the girls 200 medley relay, Hill, McClanahan, Beverly and Castilleja finished 10th with a 2:00.91 posting.

In the boy’s 200 freestyle relay, Chance Miller, Peter Davidhizer, Dalton Smith and Ryan Gormey placed 15th 1:42.33 posted time.

Kelsey Hill posted 1:06.30 in the 100 backstroke to finish in 12th place. On the boys’ side of the 100 backstroke, English placed 11th with a time of 5:57.58.

Pueyo finished in 15th place in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.42).

The 400 freestyle relay girls team of Shelby Hill, Colleen Thompson, Paige Losack and Kate Jones finished with a time of 4:42.41.

English, Dawson, Pueyo and Bitara were 11th in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:34.45 posting.

The University Interscholastic League will officially announce call-ups for the state meet on Monday morning.

As Walker County gears up for the 2014 Relay for Life, a special dinner will be held to honor cancer survivors and caregivers. The dinner will be held at Northside Baptist Church, 1207 FM 980, on Saturday at 6 p.m. The 2014 Walker County Relay for Life will be held on May 2 at 6 p.m. at the Huntsville High School track.
