Hornets to play Montgomery on Friday night

HUNTSVILLE — Hold the phone a minute, sports fans. Before making anymore Friday-night plans, here’s something you all need to know: The Hornets’ playoff football game against Montgomery is scheduled Friday at Buddy Moorhead Stadium in Conroe.

That’s right, the Hornets (4-6) and Bears (8-2) will play under the lights starting at 7:30 p.m.

“I talked with coach (John) Bolfing from Montgomery this morning and everything worked out very nicely for us,” Hornets head coach Shane Martin said. “We’re going to be the home team, which means we’re going to wear green. We’re going to play on Friday night, not Saturday afternoon like we thought last night. And we also get another shot at Montgomery.”

Huntsville lost a 31-0 decision to the Bears in the bi-district round of the Class 4A state playoffs last fall. Martin points out that the Hornets beat Montgomery two times prior to the teams’ 2010 playoff meeting.

“We’re excited to be playing Montgomery again,” Martin said. “We all think this is one of the best first-round matchups in the area.”

In another rematch from last year’s postseason, the New Waverly Bulldogs play Frankston on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Buffalo High School.

Last season, Frankston held on for a 24-21 victory over New Waverly.
