Huntsville girls basketball coach Devin Gabbard wasn’t pleased about the Lady Hornets’ performance in a 47-35 loss to Kingwood Park on Tuesday at the Willis tournament.
“We came out flat like we did in our second game yesterday,” the coach said. “We talked about it in-between games today and we fixed our problem.”
The Lady Hornets did just that and rolled to a 51-28 victory over New Caney in their second contest Tuesday and will play again today against Oak Ridge at 10:30 a.m. in Willis.
Senior guard Jakeisha Harrison led Huntsville with 14 points in the win over New Caney. Freshman guard Cedra Coleman chipped in nine points, and sophomore post Ronisha Major scored eight. Junior guard Tayler Gray also added eight points for the Lady Hornets, who improved to 10-7 overall.
“I got the chance to play a lot of kids and we were able to play different rotations against New Caney,” Gabbard said. “We defended better and only gave up 14 points in both halves. When we show up defensively, we can beat anybody. We also hit some outside shots against the zone and that frees up Ronisha under the basket.
“We struggled with the zone in the loss to Kingwood Park, and I take responsibility for that.”
Harrison also led the Lady Hornets with 10 points in the loss to Kingwood Park. Junior guard Shonecra James added nine points and Major finished with seven.
Huntsville (2-0 in district) returns to 18-4A action on Friday when the Lady Hornets host Waller at 7:30 p.m.
