Senior Jaleesa Thomas, freshman Ronisha Major and junior Destini Henderson all scored in double figures Tuesday, leading the Lady Hornets to a 51-32 victory over Madisonville.
Thomas and Major poured in 15 points apiece and Henderson added 14 for Huntsville, which improved to 3-4 on the season after the win. Thomas also grabbed six rebounds and dished out six assists. Major had eight boards, four assists, two steals and three blocks. Henderson yanked down nine rebounds and senior Nicole White grabbed seven boards.
“The kids did a tremendous job doing what we had in mind both offensively and defensively,” Lady Hornets coach Devin Gabbard said. “Offensively, Jaleesa Thomas could go out and score 30 on any given night. We want her to let the game come to her, though, while getting other people involved. Tonight, she effortlessly had a 15-point game because she got Ronisha and Destini involved.”
After a slow start by both teams, the Lady Hornets clamped down defensively in the second quarter and limited Madisonville to three points. Huntsville took a 20-14 lead into the break. The Lady Mustangs stayed within striking distance through three quarters, but with Thomas, Major and Henderson leading the way, the Lady Hornets outscored Madisonville 21-7 down the stretch to break the game open.
“Before the game we talked about controlling Madisonville’s penetration and controlling the boards. We did both tonight,” Gabbard said. “We outrebounded them 34-21.”
The Lady Hornets will be off until next Tuesday when they play host to Diboll in another girls-boys basketball doubleheader. The Huntsville girls are tentatively scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m., with the boys’ game against Crockett to follow.
