The Huntsville Hornet football team wrapped up its spring practice Friday at the high school practice field with the intrasquad scrimmage that pitted the Green against the White, and the Green came away with an 18-0 win.
“I thought we accomplished a whole lot this spring,” HHS coach Mitchell Coey said. “I got to see a lot of things today. We pretty physical. A lot of kids got to play and got on film so we can evaluate them.”
Green quarterback Justin Gilbert scored a pair of touchdowns for the first-team offense.
He began with a 20-yard scamper on the team’s second possession and scored later on when he faked the ball to the running back up the middle and scooted around the right side for the other score.
“All of them showed at times some pretty good stuff,” Coey spoke of his four quarterbacks which saw playing time. “We saw Gilbert at his best, so he’s definitely a pretty good one. (George) Perry did a good job, and the little freshman (Wheeler) is a pretty tough little kid. As the spring went on, he showed a lot of good things. (Cody) Coleman threw the ball well at times as well.”
Anthony Griffin had a pair of long receptions, one of which set up the Green’s last touchdown, and finished with nearly 100 yards receiving.
Freshman Mark Wheeler, who played and scored during the opening two quarters for the younger players, connected with Griffin as the third quarter of the varsity game expired.
Daniel Rodriguez scored on an 8-yard draw play up the middle for Green and also added an interception.
Paterrian Major scored the only touchdown for the White, which came in the two quarters played by the junior varsity. On fourth down, Major broke a few tackles and raced 75 yards to pay dirt.
“The players can relax a few days, and as school gets out and they get done with their finals, I expect them to be back in the weight room, continue to work and get ready for August,” Coey said.
