It looks like the Hornet golf team knows what it’s doing. On Friday in the first round of a tournament hosted by Montgomery High School, the Huntsville boys turned in a season-best team score of 307, which was good enough for fourth place in the 26-team field.
Senior Caleb LeNorman shot an even-par 72 on the Pecan Lakes course where the District 18-4A tournament will be held later this spring. Junior Nathan Watson and senior Jake Bradley both carded 77s, while sophomores Ryan Bennett (81) and Brent Baker (82) turned in two more low scores.
“We had five solid scores,” Hornets coach Marcus Evans said, “and we needed them to stay ahead of Montgomery. They played well today, too. They shot a 311 and they’re a strong team. We need to play well again tomorrow to beat them.”
Katy Seven Lakes leads the team standings going into today’s final round. Seven Lakes shot a terrific 298, which is two shots better than The Woodlands. Klein Collins stands third at 302.
Huntsville has three players competing in the individual medalist standings. Junior Cole Tatsch shot an 82, sophomore Tyler Belovsky fired an 85 and sophomore Tyler Shaulis carded an 87.
Evans said Friday was a good day for his entire team.
“We’ve been a little inconsistent this spring, but I really felt like we turned the corner during our tournament in Austin recently. We played well again today, so maybe we’re starting to play up to our potential.”
The Hornets will begin play today at 9:20 a.m.
