After losing 3-point threats to graduation this past season, the Bearkat coaching staff knew they needed to fill those positions. The Bearkats got just the player they wanted in Corey Allmond, who signed with SHSU.
“He’s a good shooter,” SHSU head coach Bob Marlin said. “But he also runs the point well. I would say he’s more of a combo guard. He’s strong and a good defender.
“We lost three shooters, so we needed a perimeter shooter especially with the 3-point line moving back a foot.”
The 6 foot 1 inch, 180-pound guard transfers to Sam Houston from Howard College in Big Spring, Texas.
St. John’s also had interest in the shooting guard. Allmond visited Sam Houston and St. John’s a number of times, but ultimately chose the Bearkats.
At Howard College last season, he shot over 50 percent from the field and 42 percent from 3-point range with nearly 100 treys.
He was the Western Junior College Athletic Conference’s sixth leading scorer with 17.9 points per game. He was named to the All-WJCAC first team.
The shooting guard from Oxon Hill, Md. joins the three other Bearkat signees, Drae Murray from Huntsville, Antuan Bootle from Houston and Lance Pevehouse of League City.
