George L. Woods
George L. Woods, age 80, known as Leonard, passed away Friday, Oct. 09, in Conroe.
Leonard was a life-long resident of Walker County. He was raised on his “Papas” farm near the Hopewell community.
Having completed a fourth-grade education. he continued work on the farm until he married at age 25. His Papa changed his age to keep him from being drafted during World War II.
He is remembered by family and friends as a lover of animals. He always kept numerous domestic farm animals and he also raised a garden. Leonard retired from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department after 31 years of service at the State Fish Hatchery in Huntsville.
He applied his animal husbandry skills to raise fish for distrbution to pond owners. State biologists would often seek his common-sense knowledge for raising fish. A lover of life, he was always ready to laugh, and cut-up a bit, at “get-togethers” and sing the “MILK COW BLUES.”
He is survived by his wife of 37 years; Joyce L. Woods of Huntsville; two daughters; Sharon Widner and husband milton of Trinity, Carol Ann McGilberry andhusband Danny of Huntsville; five sons, Terry Woods and wife Wanda (Susie), Gene Woods and wife Joy and Dwayne Woods, all of Huntsville, Bill Woods and Wife Jackie of Trinity and Johnny Woods and wife Sheryl of Dallas; a sister; Betty Lou Callaway and husband Leo of Huntsville; two brothers, Marion E. Woods and wife Betty of Trinity and Alvin Davies (Pee Wee) Woods and wife Betty of Huntington, Texas; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by a son; Ronnie Woods; sisters; Alma B. Avritt, Jenny Lee Mathews; brothers; E.C. Woods, Roger Woods, Sherrel Woods; and a grandson Paul Woods.
Visitation will be Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, in the Brooke Funeral Home Chapel from 4 to 6 p.m.
Services will be Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at 3 p.m. at the McAdams Cemetery Chapel with Reagan Cooksey officating.
Interment to follow at McAdams Cemetery.
