HPD arrests suspect wanted for Houston murder

HUNTSVILLE — A misdemeanor theft call turned into an arrest for a capital murder warrant and other felonies on Saturday at the West Hill Mall.

The suspect, Anthony Johnson, 22, had taken clothing from a store in the mall without making payment. Mall security followed him outside, and with the help of a concerned citizen, detained Johnson until the police arrived.

Huntsville Police Department officer Cody Perkins and Corporal Justin Schubert responded to West Hill Mall in reference to a shoplifter who had been detained by mall security.

Further investigation determined that Johnson had an active capital murder warrant from the Houston Police Department.

Johnson was additionally charged with theft, possession of stolen firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm by felon, failure to identify and public intoxication.

A second suspect, Darkeis Cartwright, 23, was located by the responding officers, which then lead to the suspect vehicle and the recovery of numerous stolen property items.

Cartwright was charged with possession of Illegal smoking product, possession of drug paraphernalia and public intoxication.

As part of this ongoing investigation, detectives from Huntsville Police Department have identified stolen property in Johnson’s vehicle from a recent burglary within the city of Huntsville.

Huntsville detectives are working closely with Houston detectives and other surrounding agencies to identify additional stolen property.

Huntsville Police Chief Kevin Lunsford commended the actions of mall security, as well as the citizen who assisted.

“Their quick responses have helped take a violent offender off the streets, and the keen observation of officers on the scene led to the recovery of stolen property from burglaries in Huntsville and other surrounding areas,” Lunsford said.
